Tim,
In all likelyhood, LNL coordinated with the FFA and air traffic controllers
to ensure that flight paths were routed to avoid the anticipated path of the
laser. To obtain the best results, of course, the laser was pointed
perfectly veritically, further minimizing the possibility of illuminating a
cockpit.
Also, San Jose and Oakland airports have very little or no traffic after
midnight. The only traffic arriving at SFO late at night is coming from the
west and is routed well north of Mount Hamilton.
In view of all of this, the Lick system has very little chance of ausing a
hazard to aircraft navigation.

This begs the question... How do observatories such as the Lick get away
with using the huge lasers on their adaptive optics systems? The lick
observatory is quite close to at least three airports and a zone of busy air
traffic.
