Chris,
If you set up the tripod as a pier you may wish you had a proper pier
after the fourth time you kick, bump, or knee a tripod leg in the dark
and lose alignment.
I built a concrete pier for my 12" and it wasn't all that big of a
job. I dug a 3' diameter by 3' deep hole and used 8" "Quik-Tube".
Pictures of the top are on my site. This thing is SOLID and holds the
12" perfectly. I can also get close in to the 'scope without bumping
it out of alignment.
If you're interested I'll send a detailed description of how it was
done and what to watch out for.
I like creature comforts as well, but I have also found that I'm
*sacrificing* imaging time to LOOK through the 'scope - something a
camera can't replace IMO. The modest observatory and pier make this
much more enjoyable.
