Your setup sounds fine. It's been many moons since I used an
OAG so I can't remember which brand does what but you need to
check out different brands of OAGs. Although the hookups are
essentially the same they differ in how versatile they are in
adjusting the off axis pickup.
Which EOS body do you have? The EOS-1, -1N, and maybe the -630
don't use the battery to hold the shutter open, although I am
almost positive that all of the other bodies do.
