Well... without the wedge, you cannot do long exposure piggyback photography.

I am also a little concerned about not having control over field rotation as much
as you would with polar alignment. Once the scope is properly polar aligned,
there is really no concern of field rotation. I do wonder what happens if/when the
field de-rotator does not rotate at exactly the correct speed due to a pointing
inaccuracy or something else. It seems to be one more thing to worry about
while doing photography.

On the plus side, it would be much more stable, wouldn't wobble when you
breathe on it, and would take a fraction of the time to set up.

My first reaction is that there would be a slight tradeoff in final picture quality,
but I really don't know if that's the case. I've seen some really good pictures
taken with field de-rotators.

My short answer is - I don't know.
