I've seen this too and not only on this list, but on others as well. When I
received 500K of such junk lately, I decided to find out what causes it by
asking senders about software and settings. I found four culprits:

1) Sending attachments directly to lists. This doesn't happen a lot as most
people realize that you should only send attachments through private mail.

2) Sending mail through Microsoft Exchange with its MIME option activated.
This also generates files that look like this to the recipients:

This happens quite often and I think most people are not aware of what they
are doing (unless they subscribe in digest mode and see their own posts).

It explains how to get rid of the MIME attachments. Unfortunately in
solving this problem, another one can be created which manifests itself in
= characters at the end of each line. Probably the best solution to all
these problems is to download Eudora from http://www.eudora.com

The same applies to MS Outlook.

3) Using Lotus Notes with a graphical letterhead. This only works when
sending mail to other Notes users, everybody else will receive the graphics
as junk. You can switch this off, but I don't know the details.

4) Using Netscape Navigator 4.0 beta. This allows you to send HTML encoded
messages as e-mail attachments. Of course this only makes sense to people
who read their e-mail with the same program. Let's hope this option doesn't
make it into the final release.

So it seems like at least three companies (Microsoft, IBM/Lotus and
Netscape) are releasing proprietary e-mail schemes. The reason behind this
is probably that all three want a slice of the emerging intranet market and
using proprietary schemes is a way of enforcing "customer loyalty". Of
course this is a serious pest for mailing lists like MAPUG, so let's all
try to stick to plain vanilla e-mail.

No it doesn't, please read the above. Most mail programs support MIME, but
only through private (that is: direct) mail, not through lists.
