I agree that it helps a lot to wiggle the handle of the bolt while pushing
upwards slightly before screwing the bolt in...also, it is difficult to
obtain a good, tight, rigid connection without lifting the legs (of the
tripod!)
one at a time during the final turn(s) of the bolt. That evens out the leg
spacing and permits an optimal match of leg spacing to spreader-arm spacing.

Ive never seen any aluminum shavings from the bolt hole, even with no
lubricant
on the bolt, and Id be mighty worried about my technique if I did see them.
