It can be done as I suggested in my post by listening to the motors
and finding the two extremes of adjustment of the pots by listening
to the noise from the motor.You then put the pot in the center
point of these two adjustments.However this is hit and miss
When I did this the adjustment changed after a months use.
I then did it properly and used a scope.Any old rubbish scope
will do with a bandwidth of 5 mhz or more.The one I used was made
in 1961.
