Well, the saga is ended. I got installed a "new" motherboard and a new RA
motor from the repair kit under warranty and now all is well, mostly
anyway. The RA drive makes a different noise when fast slewing east than
it does slewing west. Is that worth worrying about if my pointing accuracy
is OK?

"New" is in quotes because while it is new to me the motherboard I received
in the repair kit is clearly not a brand new board; it had clearly been
installed in some other LX200 (there were scuff marks in all the screw
holes) and there was a capacitor soldered on top of one of the chips and an
additional wire installed on the component side of the board. I hope that
whatever caused the previous owner to return that board has really been
fixed!

Thanks again to Bill Miller and all the others of you that helped me thru this.
