I've got one which is just as bad.

I'll save my bad motherboard story for another time.........

Only 7 days after getting my brand new LX200, My hand controller begin to flicker, the scope began to violently slew in all directions. I quickly removed power. I had noticed what sounded like a piece of platic rattling around in the hand controller from the first day I unboxed the thing, but hey, I figured it was just made that way. Could this be the culprit? I opened the hand controller, and to my suprise discovered that the Aluminum Rivet which they use to attach the hanger hook and broken off. The small scrap of Al managed to lodge itself between to pins on the 6805, shorting it out.

Bad design?

Probably not bad design, just a bad unit. Meade gets the hand controllers from an outside source. They QC them, but that is one the probably would not have caught.
