I believe my 8" LX200 field tripod qualifies as new (6 months). Four days ago I applied chrome polish to remove minor rusting. It worked just fine. There does not appear to be any protective plastic coating.

One suggestion .... Be careful about what you use to clean the legs. I think there is a protective plastic coating applied to the chrome. If you take it off (the chrome polish I used did) the legs will rust quickly (if they are outside all the time). This may not apply to the newer tripods - I haven't checked my LX-200 tripod for this yet. The problem I had was with my old LX-6's tripod.
