sterday I got the scope aligned mid afternoon (around 4 p.m.) by using the moon >to locate Regulus (it was not in the field and took a little searching). I then

The other thing I think you should try, is to do a TWO star alignment, very precise at about 4:30am (approx.) one weekend morning, and leave the scope running all day.. I once had it going for 36 hours, and had a ball going from object to object.. The 40mm SWA will do the trick, everything should end up in that eyepiece.

Then..indeed, practice everything else in TWILIGHT..using the finder scope as an aid..
