Well, you learn something new every day:

It seems, according to <URL:http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html>
that the LMC is NOT the closest galaxy to our own. That distinction now
belongs to "The Sagittarius Dwarf" whose image appears on the
aforementioned WWW page. I doubt we will ever see this galaxy with an
amateur scope, though, the image, also available at
<URL:http://sparc.not.iac.es/~oksanen/images/sgrdwarf.gif>, looks pretty
faint and was 500s with a 2.5m scope. Nevertheless I would be curious to
know the RA and Dec of this object if anyone has it handy.
