First let me make a correction. It was Kevin Medlock (not Matlock) who
suggested this. All I know about it is that it is an open foam that is
fairly coarse. It is used for air filters. Kevin said something about a
foam supplier in San Jose who will cut pieces off a large block. I don't
know much more than that, except that you should make sure that the black
paint you use will not dissolve the foam. A good foam supplier should
know.
