I have had all the problems that have been mentioned here by John,
Truck, Emilio, and others. I spent 1 1/2 years sending my scope back
and forth to Meade for solutions to their product defects. Mike Leigh
even took it home with him for a couple of weeks to test it. I do not
believe they were aware of the problems with the RA backlash and dec
motor until then, they may have been, and they are now. If they claim
different, let me know. Everything relating to my experience is in
writing and I will gladly share it with you if you contact me by private
email. If someone wants to discuss the pros and cons of a class action
lawsuit, I will be glad to discuss that by private email. (The cost is
prohibitive and the rewards are minimal)
There is no need for me to go into my experience. We all have our
stories. What needs to be siad here is that eventually Meade will
respond to your problems. You have to press the issue. After 1 1/2
years of writing to Mike Leigh, Scott Byrum (Mikes Boss), and Steve
Murdok, I finally did receive a full refund on my scope, an 8.8mm UW EP
as compensation, and some satisfaction. Was it worth it? No, my stress
level was way too high and my blood pressure was through the roof.
(damages?, not likely in most states)
Many of us who are having problems are taking their LX-50s to the peak
of their performance, astrophotography. Unfortunately, we are in a
small minority. Many others are very happy with their scopes. I did
purchase an LX200 and I am extremely happy with its optical, mechanical,
and electronic performance.
Meade will respond. They have problems with the LX-50, but they do want
to fix them. Be specific when discussing your problem. Follow
everything up in writing to the above named individuals. Offer to take
the scope to an independent party for testing. Follow through with
Meades suggestions and quick fixes (RA Chips). Provide immediate
feedback in writing. Inform Meade of your demand for an amicable
soultion. BE PERSISTENT-it does work with Meade.

Ill go back to my lurking mode now :)
