Doug: Welcome to the group.
Two things that the focal reducer does:
1. Gives you lower power with same eyepiece
2. gives you wider field of view (FOV)
3. gives you more sky coverage with a ccd camera. (this is the same as #2)
If you have a f/10 telescope then the Meade/Celestron reducer will give you
f/6.3
Other brands eg. Optec will give you an f/3.3 but does not work well visually.
Take a look at Goc Gs web page for lost of info on the LX-200.
