Dont take this as gospel, but all the information I got when I was deciding
whether or not to get the LX200 was that the 12V and 18V scopes were
electrically identical. Meade merely decided to increse the input voltage to
cure some problems. What these problems were was never rationally explained
to me, though.

I elected to use 12V on my 18V scope because I was too cheap to get the 12-1
converter, because I was not willing to sacrifice a little battery capacity
to the inefficiencies of the converter, and because the idea of using it
offended my sense of simplicity. Remember, though, that I bought the LX200
after waiting a year for the never materialized Celestron Ultima2000, with
its self contained power source.
