manufacturer (Meade). According to them it causes less current draw, and
has the scope operate more optimally.
It also gives you a higher speed slew rate, albeit noisier.
New motor: This is only necessary if your old motor dies. As far as I know
there have been no design changes in the motor.

Going to 18V and getting a new motor are entirely different
and independent events, you can do one without the other.
Right now (with *very* little data), 18V *seems* to be cor-
related with increased risk of failure of the drives.
A new motor gets you a new motor and gear-box assembly,
and that includes part of the position encoder circuits.
