Then I started using Ralph's SAO method. I did a lot of iterations, making
half corrections on both stars. Convergence towards almost perfect
centering in the 9mm illuminated reticle was slow, but finally worked.
Subsequent drift alignment testing showed absolutely no detectable DEC
drift on both a Southern and Western star for at least 15 minutes!

Congrats Dick on solving your problem. I eventually hope to post
that we've solved our "pinched optics" problems as well.

Could someone post Ralph Pass' SAO alignment method. I'd be very
interested in knowing it. Although I've polar aligned our old Newtonian
countless times I've never had the need for such precise alignment as with
the LX200. Any help I can get in arriving at a relatively quick method
would be much appreciated.
