John:
This is exactly what I did. For fine adjustment I slip U shaped
spacers (0.001 inch thickness, cut out from lids of tin cans) between
washers and the flat base plate of my homemade pier. First I drift
align on the meridian (add/remove spacers on the LX200 base's
2 bottom 3/8 inch bolts), then I move the RA to 30deg above horizon
and drift align (add/remove spacers on the top 3/8 inch bolt) for an
elevation only adjustment. The alignment accuracy made me real
happy being able to slew to any region of the sky and capture a
target first time on my 8x5 arc min ST7 LX200 12inch. I also use
the ST7 to do the drift alignment. In fact I haven't used an
eyepiece (other than the finder scope) since I got the ST7.
