I summary, we all agree the 10" will deliver better images. However, the
portability is a real concern. I had a huge 8" Newtonian stuck in a closet for
20 years, too hard to lug it outside!
The 10" will likely deliver a bit better view of solar system items, but if
you luck out with a better mirror on the 8", then you may end up with just as
good if not better views on the 8, than the 10.. it is hard to say how the
mirror will end up. It is also only a very rare instance that the atmosphere
will settle down enough for you to notice that difference, but to some folks,
that is important.
The 10" will deliver a sharp enough increase in light that deep sky objects
will be enhanced noticeably. However, turning up the brightness 40% is not a
night and day difference.'
